Swimming Safely
The sugar-white sand and emerald-colored water of our pristine beaches provide a great place to have fun, but be aware. When you go swimming, think about it. Don't just dive in. Make sure the water is deep enough. Don't surf unless you can swim, and never swim alone. If you go to the beach by yourself, go to an area where there are lifeguards.
The Gulf of Mexico has tides, currents, and washouts. Be aware of them. If you are caught in a washout, don't panic. Swim parallel to the beach until you can swim toward the shore without struggling. Look for the surf warning flags. A green flag means calm conditions - swim with usual care. Yellow denotes rough surf or likely currents - swim with special caution. Don't swim if red flags are flying. This means dangerous conditions. If there is no flag flying, there is no lifeguard on duty, and a surf advisory is not available. During electrical storms, get off the beach.
For a fun and safe day at the beach, also see our beach safety section.

Pensacola Beach Elementary School is located on beautiful Santa Rosa Island. The faculty and staff make every effort to ensure that each student has a successful and enriching educational experience. Everyone knows each other at the "beach school", as we are often called, and our small size enables us to provide a warm nurturing environment. We have 134 students this year in Grades Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. We are part of the Escambia County School District .
After completing Fifth Grade at the Beach School, most children attend Middle and High School in nearby Gulf Breeze which is part of the Santa Rosa County School District. We also send between 8 and 10 students to Escambia's Brown Barge Middle School - a leading magnet school in the district. Read the 5th Grade Visitors Guide to Pensacola Beach .
| From our pier we see many kinds of marine life from dolphins, manatees, brown and cow rays, different types of sharks, crabs. In addition, there are many types of fish swimming around the pier as well as marine birds. Watching the activities of these species around the pier has become a favorite for some of our local schools which we host here at the pier. |

| Many gulf species are caught from our pier such as King & Spanish Mackerel, Cobia, Pompano, Mahi Mahi, Flounder, Whiting, White & Speckle Trout, Blue Fish, Tarpon, Bonito, Red Fish just to name a few. In the winter, we catch many nice red fish and sheephead. A surprising catch this summer was our first Sailfish weighing 50 pounds caught off the end as seen to the left here. The Gulf pier also hosts and participates in many fishing tournaments so be sure to check with us to see what we have going on. This year we gave free passes to the first legal cobia and king mackerel. |
