Life's a Beach at Pensacola Beach

Pensacola Beach Homes

Life's a Beach

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN PENSACOLA BEACH PROPERTIES:
850-438-7755
877-461-9907

If it has been a while since you’ve come to the beach, take a deep breath. It’s time. The gentle breeze is still soothing just as the crystal-clear waves roll in from the emerald sea. The flawless white sand is just as soft as before, and the sea oats still dance for a glowing sun.

If you ever watched EXTREME HOMES on HGTV.com,  you will sometimes see on the flash intro the UFO alien house on Pensacola  Beach.

The Quietwater Beach Boardwalk

The Boardwalk is on the Santa Rosa Sound side of the island, directly across from Casino Beach. Retail shops, restaurants, nightclubs, street musicians and sidewalk artists line it. The Boardwalk has a large sea shell stage where concerts are held several times a year. Behind it, there is a beach silent except for the sounds of sea gulls, and children making sand castles. Most events are held here, including The Lobster Fest, Bushwacker Fest, and the Independence Day fireworks. Behind the beach there is a boat dock where anyone can park their boats free of charge.

 Fort Pickens

The Fort itself is only part of the National Seashore's attractions: the boundary stretches back seven miles (11 km). (Fodor's rates Ft. Pickens' beaches the best in Florida.) So whether you take the bike trail or the highway, you'll find campgrounds, nature trails, and miles and miles of protected beaches perfect for sand dollar and sea shell hunting, and for picking through flotsam washed ashore from the high seas and exotic foreign ports. The highway to the Fort has been blocked since hurricane Ivan caused significant damage to the surrounding areas and the Fort itself. The Fort is still accessible by hiking or biking, but the structure itself is very weak due to storm damage, and considered a safety hazard.

Novelty houses

Dome of a Home, Pensacola Beach, Florida
Futuro house, Pensacola Beach, Florida

Pensacola Beach is home to several "novelty houses", including a house with a UFO-shaped Futuro attached as a second story. This Futuro house is sometimes called the "Spaceship House." Another novelty house is the "Dome of a Home", a home in the form of a large concrete dome, designed to structurally withstand hurricane-force winds and storm surge.

Education

There is one school on Pensacola Beach. The Pensacola Beach Elementary School is for children from kindergarten through fifth grade. This school has an enrollment ranging from 120 to 140 students. All elementary-school age children on Pensacola Beach are eligible to attend the school. The first year the school was open, for the school year 1977-1978, classes were held in an empty A-frame house owned by a local named Harry Gowens. The Pensacola Beach Volunteer Fire Department building was also used in aiding the teachers and administrators. In November 1977, four portable buildings were moved to the present site. The school has continued to grow and produce some outstanding students. The school has been ranked as an 'A' school in the state for many years running. They have also received the 5 Star School award since 1998. This award recognizes schools with exemplary student involvement. In 2001 the Pensacola Beach Elementary lost its ties to the Escambia County School District and became a Charter school. Now the school, with the help of parents, volunteers, and the community, must find ways to pay for their resources and staff.

Emerald Coast of Florida by Jeannette Spencer
March 16th, 2010 7:32 PM

The Beaches of THE EMERALD COAST of Florida!

Pensacola and Perdido Key are Escambia County Beaches in Florida. In 2010, Hotel Indigo, a 162 room Pensacola Beach boutique luxury hotel, is scheduled to open in spring 2010.  Features include a rooftop swimming pool, 3000 sf of meeting space and seasonal changing decor.  Pensacola Beach has more public beaches and parking than any other beach between New Orleans and Tallahassee.  As with all of the Emerald Coast of Florida, the beaches have surgary white sand due to crystal quartz that is washed ashore.  The texture beneath your toes feels like sugar.  This area has been considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.  The sand looks like snow!  To view available properties for sale, click here!

Fort Pickens is located on Pensacola Beach and visitors can have access to the Gulf Islands National Seashore.  Fort Pickens is a massive brick fortress built before the Civil War.  Fort Pickens was completed in 1834 and used until WWII.    Fort Pickens has changed over the years, so be sure to take the self-guided tour and peel back the layers of history. You'll see the plaster-lined rooms that were intended as officers' quarters, and later used to house Apache prisoners. The most famous resident, Geronimo, lived in identical rooms along the south wall, which have since collapsed. Fort Pickens now houses an auditorium, a museum, and a visitors center offering information about the area.  To view Pensacola Beach's history, click on Pensacola Beach History for a connection to the Beach's historical Society!

Navarre Beach is a LAID-BACK Family area type of beach to de-stress!  Tucked away on the eastern edge of Santa Rosa Island between the Gulf Islands National Seashore and a county apark, Navarre Beach's emerald colored waters reflect gently on the Sugary white sandy beaches!  It has a nature based venue to relax and a slower pace where one can find miles of beaches undeveloped to swim, sunbathe, walk, look for shells, fly a kite, read a book or go for a beachside biking excursion.  The Navarre Beach Park opened in 2008 and it is free; offering 11 gazebos, covered picnic areas, restrooms and free music in the park!

DOWNTOWN MASTER PLAN

Downtown Pensacola is host to many recreational activities and events. At the center of Downtown are its many public parks – with acres of century-old oak trees, these parks are known for hosting events and concerts throughout the year. Events occur every week Downtown – from the ever-popular McGuire’s Run, which draws thousands of runners annually – to numerous parades, festivals, marathons, and summer nights gathering on a blanket for “Evenings in Old Seville Square.” With activities that range from experiencing the coastal ecosystem to watching the famous sunset over the bay every night, Downtown serves as a recreational hub for all of Pensacola.

Project Greenshores - a habitat-restoration project along downtown Pensacola's waterfront, attracts large numbers of waterbirds, gulls, tern, and cormorants. Located on the northwest side of the Pensacola Bay Bridge, sometimes more than 300 are seen at one time!

Civic Center - home to Pensacola’s own hockey team, the Ice Pilots, and numerous sports activities from youth ice hockey to a competitive indoor soccer league. You’ll also find your favorite artists, musicians and performers here.
For more information, go to
www.pensacolaciviccenter.com

Historic Pensacola Village - a complex of late nineteenth century homes, several museums and the Colonial Archaeological Trail. The Village includes homes such as the Lavalle House, the Dorr House, the Julee Cottage and other historical homes. The Museums include the "Museum of Industry, Museum of Commerce, T.T. Wentworth, Jr., Florida State Museum. The Colonial Archaeological Trail begins with an exhibit telling you about the British Fort site and it's history then your led to a Garrison Kitchen, then a government house, a British well sight and other excavations.

Seville Square - at the center of Downtown’s historical district is Seville Square, a park nearly 200 years old. In the 1960's a small group of preservationists began the reconstruction of the square and today it serves as the focal point of festivals and concerts where thousands gather.

Pensacola’s Community Maritime Park (Plan Currently in the works) - The park represents an exciting new chapter for Pensacola's waterfront. The Community Maritime Park is a public/private venture planned for the 27.5 acres of publicly owned property on Pensacola Bay. It will include a 3,500-seat multi-purpose stadium, a conference/continuing education center, a maritime museum, and a mixed-use development including retail and commercial space. On April 14, 2005, the City Council approved to move forward with the plan. Next on the agenda is for the council to approve the finances, development and operations for the plan they accepted. For more information on this very exciting plan, go to www.propensacola.com

WHO LIVES DOWNTOWN?

During this past August and September, the Pensacola Downtown Improvement Board conducted a survey of the 588 households (1058 residents) that reside within the area bounded by Belmont and Heinberg Streets on the North, “A” Street on the West, 17 th Street on the East, and the shoreline of Pensacola Bay on the south. The results, from this annual survey of downtown residents sheds new and revealing light on those that call the downtown area home.

With an 88% confidence level, the results suggest that the typical downtown resident was most often (53%) female. Similar majority percentages held true for all parts of the survey area except for the waterfront neighborhoods within the area south of Garden Street and west of Palafox Street. In that quadrant of downtown, men outnumbered women by almost 2 to 1.

The average age for the typical downtown resident was around 57. Some 45% of all downtown residents fall within the age category of 50 to 64. The next largest age group (23%) was those that identified their age as being from 35 to 49. Only 5% of all downtown residents are over the age of 75 while just 11% were under the age of 18.

Typical educational attainment for downtown residents is defined as someone with at least a college degree (67%). Forty-one percent of the total downtown residential population also has some graduate work or a graduate degree or more. Only 4% of those over the age of eighteen have not completed college.

Eighty-nine percent of all downtown households contain no children (i.e. those under the age of 18). The fewest children were found in the Belmont-DeVillers section of the survey area ( i.e. the area north of Garden Street and west of Palafox Street). Of the 11% of downtown households that do have children, a majority (55%) had only one child. The average household size was 1.8 persons. Thirty-eight percent of the people residing downtown live alone. The most common family unit was defined as spouses or significant others living together (48%). Another 5% of households defined the relationship of the people living in the household as roommates.

Thirty percent of downtown households have combined household income levels in excess of $100,000. The next largest household income category (20%) was found among those having incomes between $40,000 to $59,000. Only 14% of households had combined incomes less than $20,000. These numbers are not surprising considering that 70% of all downtown residents are employed. Another 21% are retired. The 9% that do not define themselves as actively in the workforce or retired include stay-at-home spouses, full-time students, and the unemployed.

Of those that work, 23% are engaged in general business activities. Employment in education and government each account for 16% of the employment sectors found among downtown residents. Medical professions comprised another 15%; and service sector jobs are held by 13% of all downtown residents. Other employment sectors mentioned less frequently included: legal, transportation, clerical, technology, retail, creative services, and the arts.

Not surprisingly, 35% of residents work in the downtown. 30% work outside of the downtown but within the City of Pensacola. Another 22% are employed somewhere in Escambia County outside of the City of Pensacola. Six percent work in Santa Rosa County; and another 6% work from home.

Ninety-six percent of all households have at least one automobile. An identical percentage of all residents over the age of 17 are registered to vote in Escambia County. Seventy-six percent of downtown residents own their own homes. Of those that do not currently own, 57% plan to try and purchase a home in the downtown area within the next two years.

Forty-eight percent of downtown residents have lived in the downtown for more than one year but less than six. Those that have lived downtown for more than 20 years accounted for 16% of all residents. The vast majority (89%) of downtown residents identify the primary reason for living downtown as convenience. The next closest reason (for access to cultural/artistic attractions) was identified first by only 3% of residents.

A complete report of the results from this research can be viewed on the DIB website (www.downtownpensacola.com). Please remember that this data was obtained from existing residents of Downtown Pensacola during August and September 2005 – not the purchasers and/or occupants of the ten new condominium projects planned or under construction in the same area. Armed with these results, our efforts to attract more quality retail and residential development will only be enhanced. It is indeed a great time to be in Downtown Pensacola.

Events

From Mardi Gras parades to the Blue Angel Homecoming Show, Downtown Pensacola is alive with unique events for everyone. For outdoors enthusiasts there’s McGuire’s Annual Run, where a green beer will greet you at the finish line. Looking for a taste of culture? Try Downtown Gallery Night – when hundreds of residents flock downtown as galleries and businesses host everything from art exhibitions and live demonstrations to music. If you’re lucky enough to be here in June you’ll find yourself surrounded by the Fiesta of Five Flags – celebrating the five flags of the countries that have ruled over the city with parties, parades, sand castle contests and treasure hunts!

Pensacola was named in Southern Living’s 2009 Readers Choice Awards!

Pensacola, Florida is a sea port on Pensacola Bay, which connects to the Gulf of Mexico. Pensacola is known for its 52 miles of sugary white sandy beach on Pensacola Beach to Perdido Key which is prevalent along the Florida Panhandle.

Pensacola's history dates back 450 years and is nicknamed "The City of Five Flags" due to the five governments that have flown flags over it during its history: those of Spain (Castile), France, Great Britain, the Confederate States of America, and the United States.

East Hill homes in Pensacola, Florida!

Pensacola East Hill offers electic intown living that is convenient to everything with its city location minutes from downtown Pensacola, less then 10 miles from Pensacola Beaches, and just a short drive to the mall, as well as, the airport.

After 1900, the East Hill area began to develop as the town grew. Most East Hill residents were middle class citizens who built smaller homes than those found on North Hill with the exception of those that overlook Bayou Texar and Escambia Bay.  East Hill has a wide mixture of architectural styles that range from quaint craftsman style homes, Federal, National, Neo classical, to French Provincial. A change in residential styles came with the change in economic conditions after the lumber boom.

The area features small parks, the largest of which is Bayview overlooking Bayou Texar.  The East Hill Park is called BayView.  It is the location for the annual National Wakeboard Championship. This 20 acre community park is located on Bayou Texar in Pensacola.  There are eight tennis courts, an outside arena, picnic and children's play areas.

East Hill's boundries are generally considered south of Fairfield, east of Palafox, North of Bayfront Parkway, west of Bayou Texar.

The East Hill Neighborhood Association (EHNA) boundaries are: North Lakeview to Bayou Texar, Bayou Texar shoreline south to North Cervantes, North Cervantes to East 9th Avenue, East 9th Avenue north to Lloyd Street to East 12th Avenue, East 12th Avenue north to North Lakeview. Volunteers needed for Pensacola Little Theater
March 5th, 2010 12:18 AM

http://www.pensacolalittletheatre.com/

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Each Pensacola Little Theatret performance is a labor of love, and volunteers keep the show going! All are invited to share in the excitement of the performing arts by becoming a volunteer.

Anyone who is interested in volunteering at PLT -- from high school students, to business people, to seniors -- is encouraged to become involved. PLT can use your help with a variety of volunteer opportunities, such as ushering, serving on committees, helping with artist hospitality, and assisting with mailings.

For more information, or to express your interest in volunteering, please contact Jerry Ahillen, Production Manager, at 850/434.0257 or jahillen@pensacolalittletheatre.com.

Distribution Coordinators
This is a great job for those people who like to get out and explore our area. We are always looking for help in the distribution of flyers, brochures and show posters to make sure that as many people as possible hear about Pensacola Little Theatre. Come join our team!
Staff liaison: Marketing/Public Relations

Performance Ushers
We need volunteers who would enjoy meeting, greeting and seating all of our many patrons throughout the season. Ticket taking, program distribution and audience control will also be part of your responsibilities. You should enjoy dealing with the public, and we prefer that you sign up for one performance during each Mainstage and Treehouse show.
Staff liaison: Managing Director

Special Events Volunteers
We require volunteers for many different jobs during our yearly special events. They include our annual Haunted House; PLT Dialogue; subscriber renewal party, Kids Expo and other events. We could use your talents as decorators, ticket takers and clean-up crew.
Staff liaison: Marketing/Public Relations

Carpenter/Electrician/Painter
If you have experience in any of the above listed areas, we definitely have projects which would benefit from your talents. Come join us as we build sets and have general work-calls for our shows.
Staff liaison: Technical Director

Photographer
Experience in photography and your own camera is necessary for this position. We would require your skills in still photography for capturing magic moments occurring on stage during dress rehearsals or at special events. Your photos may be shown in our newsletter/online and kept in our archives as part of PLT history.
Staff liaison: Marketing/Public Relations

Mail Outs
Work with the PLT staff on our many information and donation campaigns. Your assistance would be required to process (stuffing, labeling, etc.) mail outs to our vast database.
Staff liaison: Marketing/Public Relations

PLT Guild
Our Guild is always looking for new volunteers to help out with their fundraising events.
Liaison: PLT Guild president

Cast Members
No experience is required to audition to be a CAST member for a Little Theatre production. Our newsletter always includes information on upcoming auditions. Being cast in a production requires a major time commitment: six to eight weeks of rehearsals and two or three weekends of performances. Lead roles typically require more time than secondary roles.
