Almost thirty years after the War Between the States, the Pensacola waterfront was a bustling, brawling seaport with 875 vessels filled with 6827 sailors. In addition, some 2800 stevedores and 3000 cutters worked on the docks. This was the mood and atmosphere of the times and place of the birth of the building now known as Sarahs and Trader Jons on South Palafox St. In 1893, L. C. Sarrah, Builder, advertised in the Daily News of Pensacola that there were elegant apartments for rent in the newly constructed Phenix Building (which was Sarahs). It was occupied by a Pensacola restaurateur and saloonkeeper, John Dunn and opened as the Dunns Hotel. Back in the late 1800s and early 1900s when tall-masted schooners docked in Palafox Pier, this historic building sat in the midst of a bustling red light district.
Even though murders were numerous and brawls were a daily occurrence on the waterfront, the masonry structure stood proudly as she still does today.
The Roaring Twenties continued to roar on south Palafox Street as Prohibition came and went. Then came World War II. Trader opened his bar in 1954 and almost immediately Navy personnel showed to ease the pain of training and drawn to Traders unique brand of hospitality. Over the years, the bar and Trader have been part of so many lives. During the Korean War his Navy Flight buddies, many he had know in Miami and Key West, would stop in for an evening.
The 100 year old edifice known today as Trader Jons has been through the hurricanes of 1906, 1916, 1926, 2004, and 2005.
